If you’re looking for mini golf near Fort Leonard Wood, you have two options: the Rec Plex on base, or Putt Pirates in St. Robert. Both are 18-hole courses. One has a waterfall. The other has a small river, a secret shortcut that can get you a hole-in-one if you know what you’re doing, and three dinosaurs in the parking lot.

We’re the one with the dinosaurs.

On-Post: The Rec Plex Mini Golf Course

Fort Leonard Wood’s MWR Rec Plex has a 23,000 square-foot 18-hole miniature golf course with a waterfall as the main centerpiece, plus a go-kart track and the Wallace Outdoor Pool with a two-story double slide and splash park. Open Wednesday through Sunday to active duty, retirees, DoD civilians, dependents, and the general public. Combo packs are available for mini golf, go-karts, and pool access.

It’s a solid on-post option — especially if you’re combining mini golf with go-karts and the pool in a single afternoon.

Off-Post: Putt Pirates — 10 Minutes from the Main Gate

Putt Pirates is a full 18-hole outdoor pirate-themed mini golf course at 14797 Hwy Z in St. Robert — about 10 minutes from the Fort Leonard Wood main gate on Hwy Z. The course is built around a pirate theme with obstacles, decorations, and a small river running through the layout.

Here’s the thing about that river: the obvious play is to avoid it. But there’s a secret shortcut — intentionally hitting your ball into the river on certain holes can actually set you up for a hole-in-one. It’s not guaranteed, and we’re not going to tell you which holes. Finding the shortcut is part of the game.

The Mega Mayor — a large-scale figure of Mayor Louie Keen — overlooks the course and Route 66 beyond it. He has not revealed which holes have the shortcut either.

Pricing: Adults $9.50 + tax | Age rule: Must be 18 or have someone 18+ in the group. Hours: Verify current hours — call (573) 336-8758

Why Putt Pirates Is the Right Off-Post Choice

A family playing Putt pirates in Uranus, Missouri

The full Uranus experience is right next door. The Uranus Fudge Factory & General Store is steps away at 14400 Hwy Z — fudge in nineteen flavors made fresh daily, Uranus Ice Cream Co. (open 11 AM – 6 PM), the Sideshow Museum, and the gift shop. A round of Putt Pirates followed by ice cream is a complete afternoon off-post without driving far.

The Route 66 Neon Park is free and next door. After your round, walk over to George M. Reed Roadside Park for the Route 66 Neon Park — restored vintage neon signs lit from dusk to midnight. If you’re here in the evening, it’s the right way to end the day.

It’s genuinely competitive. The pirate theme and the river shortcut give the course more personality than a standard mini golf layout. Groups get competitive. The secret shortcut makes it more interesting than it looks on the first hole.

Military discount: Yes!

Tips for Playing Putt Pirates Near Fort Leonard Wood

Find the shortcut. On certain holes, intentionally hitting your ball into the small river sets up a hole-in-one. The conventional play is to avoid the water. The winning play is to find the holes where avoiding the water is the wrong call. We’re not telling you which ones — that’s the game.

Go on a weekday. The course is quieter on weekdays. Weekend afternoons — especially in summer — are busier. A weekday morning or early afternoon means you move at your own pace.

Bring sunscreen. Putt Pirates is an outdoor course. Missouri summer sun on an open course is no joke. Apply before you start, not after hole 6 when you’ve already had enough.

Make it competitive. The standard stakes — loser buys ice cream — work perfectly here since Uranus Ice Cream Co. is steps away. The shortcut discovery adds a layer of strategy that makes the competition more interesting than a standard round.

Check the weather. The Missouri course closes for inclement weather. Call ahead at (573) 336-8758 if the forecast is uncertain.
